INTRODUCTION

  • The French Revolution of 1789 inaugurated a new era in the history of mankind.
  • It introduced for the first time the idea of republicanism based on “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity”.
  • These ideas had influenced the entire continent of Europe and also the world.
  • Attempts were made to transform institutionsLegislation, administration, justice, bureaucracy, education, finances and even religion.
  • The National Assembly and later Napoleon worked very hard and systematically to recast the old kingdom into a modern nation state.
  • The French Revolution brought about a complete destruction of the feudal order and Bourbon Monarchy.
  • The French Revolution after a violent turn led to the emergence of a great dictator, Napoleon Bonaparte
  • The new structure had a popular base and thus had a lasting influence not only on France but countries elsewhere.
